The History of Madison Street Baptist Church
The history of Madison Street Baptist Church is a testimony of God’s faithfulness, power, and abundant blessing. From its founding on March 3, 1946, to the present day, the Lord has continually worked in and through this church in a remarkable way. Throughout the decades, souls have been saved, lives have been transformed, and countless homes have been strengthened, restored, and built upon the foundation of God’s Word—all to the glory of God.
Madison Street Baptist Church has also been a place where God has called individuals into full-time Christian service. Many men have surrendered to preach the Gospel and are now faithfully serving the Lord in ministry. Among those sent out from MSBC are Ben Smith, Donald Vickers, Ricky Anderson, Jeremy Posey, Pat Lawrence, Brian Murphy, and Scotty Long. In addition, God has raised up young ladies from our church who are serving Him faithfully in Christian education, including Joy (Kennedy) Duff and Hannah Pettus. Their lives stand as a testimony to the lasting spiritual impact of a church committed to training and discipling the next generation.
In its early days, the church met in a temporary location until the first auditorium was completed in 1948. As God blessed and the congregation grew, the need for more space became evident. In 1957, the current auditorium was constructed, providing a permanent place for worship and ministry. This facility was later renovated in the early 1990s, reflecting both growth and a continued commitment to excellence in the Lord’s work. Over the years, additional buildings—including the Educational Building and Fellowship Hall—were added to accommodate the expanding ministries of the church.
In 1991, the Fellowship Hall was dedicated as “Jones Hall” in honor of Pastor Elzie Jones, who faithfully shepherded the church for nearly 40 years. His long tenure and steadfast leadership left an enduring mark on the church and its people.
From its beginning until now, Madison Street Baptist Church has been known for its unwavering stand on biblical truth. The church continues to be characterized by strong fundamental convictions, a fervent evangelistic spirit, a burden for missions, and a commitment to preaching and teaching the Word of God without compromise.
As we look back on what God has done, we are filled with gratitude. As we look ahead, we remain confident that the same God who has blessed in the past will continue to lead, guide, and use Madison Street Baptist Church for His honor and glory in the years to come.
